Wirral unveils Northside regeneration plans

A series of industrial and business units are among the council’s proposals for the area between Dock Road and the Kingsway Tunnel approach, part of which formerly housed the Wallasey gas holders.

Stretching from Birkenhead town centre to New Brighton, the suggested Northside Neighbourhood is currently an area of employment facilities, which are either empty or underused.

The development is proposed to be broken up into nine sites.

The former site of the Wallasey gasholders off Dock Road is currently vacant. Wirral Council is eyeing the plot’s potential to be used as open-air storage for vehicles, large equipment, and containers.

The gasholders were dismantled in 2015 and the local authority bought the land formerly owned by the National Grid in February.

Old Gorsey North, a former gasworks site off Old Gorsey Lane, is also earmarked for storage.

Proposals highlight three areas for industrial development. A small series of industrial units are suggested for the land between Limekiln Lane and Dock Road, as well as the Dock Road Warehouse. The storage facility at Oakdale Road South could also be redeveloped to create a larger unit.

Plans would also see the creation of a number of business units at Stone Marine Business Park, which would retain its warehouses.

Two depots are also proposed, one for Wirral Council on vacant land behind Limekiln Lane and one for Merseytravel on derelict land at the Limepits off Oakdale Road North.

Wirral Council has launched a public consultation on its plans for the masterplan for the area, which is still in the early stages of design. The consultation can be accessed until 6 September.
