Trafford approves draft Wharfside regeneration framework

With a consultation due to begin within the next few weeks, the council’s masterplan to enable the delivery of up to 5,000 homes on 215 acres between the Manchester Ship Canal, Old Trafford stadium, and Europa Way is making progress.

Trafford Council’s executive committee signed off a draft version of the plan yesterday.

The draft Trafford Wharfside Development Framework sets out a vision for a 15-year future for the area, one that includes a re-imaged setting for the Manchester United football ground, improved connections between Trafford Wharfside and the city centre, more public realm, and the building of thousands of homes, workspaces, shops, and food and beverage offerings.

Trafford Council worked alongside Peel, Salford City Council, and Manchester United on the proposals. Hawkins\Brown drew up the development framework, while Capita crafted the masterplan and parameters plans for the project. The documents also feature the work of LDA Design, Avison Young, and Civic Engineers.

Cllr Liz Patel, the executive member for economy and regeneration, described the need for a regen strategy for the area.

“Trafford Wharfside is an area that will see great change over the next 15-20 years,” she said. “With the Manchester Ship Canal on one side, it is home to many businesses, existing communities, the Imperial War Museum North and the iconic Old Trafford football stadium.”

She added later: “These plans will ensure the area is developed with well-designed new homes, green spaces, good transport and walking connections to the city centre and Salford and with the community facilities in place to make it a great place to live and work.

“We want to provide a world-class setting for Manchester United’s stadium and greatly improve the visitor experience to the area, making the most of the historical waterfront at Wharfside.”

I hope there is a continuation of the trafford road cycle routes in this framework. Not ideal being dumped on the road at white city

But will they (Trafford) implement it? They signed off a plan for the civic quarter but developers have struggled to get 4 floor buildings passed at the committee. And Pomona has been in limbo for years. We’ve still not seen the masterplan promised all those years ago.

Hmm, 5,000 homes. That’ll be a new residential population of about 15-20,000 people then, plus however much employment can be attracted in as well.

No they shouldn’t be building any more homes when we haven’t got an Accident and Emergency department and no Hospital at Trafford general hospital if they want to build more homes than reopen the A&E at Trafford general 24/7 and everything else there and make it bigger and better now

Improved road, tram and rail infrastructure to facilitate a quicker exit from the area on match days.

Manchester United own all of the land highlighted here. Looks like they’re going to make a tidy profit on land value increase with the change of use applied to residential

Really, 5.000 new homes, shops, cafes, offices. No mention of any new GPs, nhs dentists. Civic Quarter no where near completion. All this money on regeneration, when they can’t repair the roads which have never been in this state before. Just a joke.
