THING OF THE WEEK
TEE TIME… A 4,500 sq ft indoor golf venue is being lined up for Quayside, Salford Quays, with operator TeeClub promising an experience featuring seven Trackman simulators, PGA pros, TaylorMade equipment, and food & drink – everyone’s got to eat, right? The simulators will transport punters to 450 worldwide courses, including St Andrews and Pebble Beach. TeeClub was founded by golf pro Nick Holmes. Ben Hey, asset director at Peel Retail and Leisure, said: “TeeClub’s combination of sport, technology and lifestyle is a great fit for our vibrant waterside destination.”
ANNIVERSARY… A big congratulations to Seddon Construction’s Hector Lindo who this week celebrated 20 years with the business. The gateman and labourer marked the occasion with Jamaican food and, of course, a cake on site at one of the firm’s Salford developments. Lindo’s double-decade stint at Seddon is way above the average length of time individuals stay in a job in the UK, estimated to be around four and a half years.
BRIDGE THE GAP… The UK is often maligned for its ability to deliver infrastructure projects. The list of stalled or failed road and rail schemes across the country is endless. While the replacement of Greek Street bridge in Stockport is hardly HS2, it is at least encouraging to see the speed at which the project was completed and proof that we can sometimes get it right. The sped up video above makes the complex scheme look as simple as setting up a flatpack bedside table.
LIGHTEN UP… Summer is over, the nights are drawing in, and you have just peeled off the last of your flaking, sunburned skin. You need a pick me up, something to lighten the mood, perhaps literally. Fear not, because Blackpool’s famous illuminations are here to lift you out of your post-summer funk with displays from as recently as the 1990s and all the candyfloss you can afford. The big switch on is tonight and Olly Murs, who looks great for 41, has been selected to press the button. Noughties one-hit-wonder Toploader will also perform a slightly altered version of their most famous tune – Dancing in the LED Light.
AUCTION… “It’s not every day a chance to buy your own laser quest and escape room venue comes along.” Not our words, but the words of Paul Parker, associate director at auction house Pugh. He is right. A rare opportunity arose recently in Carlisle to acquire a leisure scheme that also features glow-in-the-dark mini golf. A 13,000 sq ft office off Hillcrest Avenue, previously home to energy business Total Power, went under the hammer this week and sold for £400,000. “Under new ownership, the property could continue as an entertainment venue, be returned to office use, or be redeveloped for alternative purposes subject to planning consent,” Parker enthused.
