THING OF THE WEEK
COOL RUNNINGS… Congratulations, North West property industry – you all ran a marathon. At least, that’s how it looked based on our LinkedIn feeds this past week. So far – and please, correct us if we’re wrong – it looks like the award for best time for the industry was GeoSmart Information’s Martin Lucass, who accomplished the task in 2 hours and 28 minutes.
It’s good to know that the market is staying fit – whether it’s by cycling to MIPIM, playing altogether too much padel, or running a distance that famously killed the guy who started the whole thing to begin with. Do we think it’s a bit twisted that we mock Pheidippides’ fatal race from Marathon to Athens by doing the same thing and then having a beer afterwards? Yes. But c’est la vie – or, perhaps more fittingly, Έλα ντε.
BARBIECORE… Wearing pink is no longer just a Wednesday thing. Might this have something to do with a certain blockbuster hit from last year? Regardless, the property industry seems to be all over rosy shades this year, from Sourced’s salmon flats in Liverpool to McLaren’s dusky-gradient offices in Leeds. Now Onward Homes is getting in on the action, introducing a pink racing stripe of its Onward Repairs vans. Pretty in pink? We think so.
LONDON WHO?… BOXPARK has ventured forth from the Big Smoke to explore the wonders up North. The 15,000 sq ft BOXPARK Liverpool opens officially today, but Place got a sneak peek/taste last night of the space and its offerings. Our verdict: do not miss the samosa chaat tandoori chicken from Phaat or the bao from Yum Cha. BOXPARK is hitting the ground running when it comes to events too, with indie club nights, comedy supper clubs, a brunch with Atomic Kitten, and a live screening of the Merseyside derby all on the docket for the next week.
WHERE THE ANTELOPES ROAM… It’s not just human beings who can find themselves at the mercy of the planning process. Animals can too, as evidenced by antelopes at Blackpool Zoo. The horned mammals in the seaside resort have been waiting three months for permission to be signed off for a proposed new desirable residence – or des res, as we like to call it. Plans were submitted by the zoo in January for a single-storey building with eight stables, as part of investment into improved facilities. Happily, the plans have now been approved, which means our leaping, hoofed friends have found their home on the range.

TO GO, PLEASE… This has been a great week for drive-thru fans in Greater Manchester. Bury Council’s planning department has approved proposals from Pearl Forecourt for American doughnut giant Krispy Kreme drive-thru on the old Car Time site off Bell Lane. Now American fried chicken restaurant Popeyes has confirmed its first drive-thru premises in the region, located on Bury New Road, will open next Friday. This is hot on the heels of its Manchester Piccadilly restaurant opening last year. What good cluck we have! (Sorry not sorry for the atrocious pun)
