Stretford Leisure Centre refurb plans unveiled

Members of Trafford Council’s executive is expected to give the go-ahead to progress multi-million-pound proposals for the transformation of the Chester Road facility on Monday.

If approved, Stretford Leisure Centre would benefit from an extensive upgrade as part of the council’s physical activity and sport strategy, Trafford Moving.

Trafford Council is working with Pozzoni Architects on the plans, which include a sauna, steam room, and enlarged fitness suite. Members would also have access to a ladies-only gym, two flexible studio spaces, a spin studio, and a four-court sports hall.

Other proposed sports facilities include a three-lane Urban Cricket Centre, accompanied by a viewing gallery and padding-up facility, an 82-foot swimming pool, and 66-foot learner pool.

An enlarged lobby and café are also included in the plans for the project, branded Stretford Move.

Trafford’s executive is recommended to approve capital investment of £570,000 to take the designs to the next RIBA stage.

Stretford Move follows Trafford Council’s completion of the £7m Move Urmston in 2020.

These projects are part of a £56m leisure centre upgrade project, which also includes centres in Altrincham and Sale.

Cllr Jo Harding, Trafford Council’s executive member for culture, leisure, and strategic partnerships, said: “Trafford Council is totally committed to the health and wellbeing of residents across the borough and to providing the best facilities possible to achieve fitness and health.

“We are proud of the work being carried out to our leisure centres to achieve these goals.”

Stretford Leisure Centre is operated by Trafford Leisure – a community interest company wholly owned by Trafford Council.

Jo Cherrett, chief executive of Trafford Leisure, said: “We are passionate about the health and wellbeing of our community, and a key commitment of the council is to improve our much-loved leisure centres.

“The local community in and around Stretford are passionate about their town and have an overwhelming desire to see their community thrive.”

Refurbishments are estimated to begin next year, with completion expected in 2026.

A large-scale consultation on the proposals will be held with residents if finance is granted for the development.

I was just saying the other day , it needs a revamp. I travel to Wythenshawe for a sauna, please put a extremely hot sauna in with a good gym and we will join here.
