Story Homes reveals Kendal ambitions
A site off Burton Road, identified in the South Lakeland local plan as a location for growth, is subject of an application for 491 homes.
Cumbrian firm Story wants to deliver a scheme of one- to six-bedroom homes, 35% of which will be made available as affordable housing. The site sits to the south of Kendal.
Adam McNally, Cumbria and Scotland head of land and planning for Story Homes, said: “Kendal is a thriving community with a rich heritage, and we’re excited to bring forward proposals that respond to local housing needs while respecting the character of the area and improving connectivity.
“Having already established a presence here at our Brigsteer Rise, The Beeches and Kendal Parks Farm developments, we are committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable homes that complement the town.
“Our plans for Burton Road focus on creating a vibrant neighbourhood with generous green spaces, enhanced public areas and rights of way, and homes people will be proud to live in. We look forward to engaging with Westmorland and Furness Council and the local community as the application progresses.”
Story said that the development will be set within landscaped grounds with significant new tree and shrub planting set within green spaces, designed to enhance local biodiversity. SuDS will be incorporated.
Section 106 and Community Infrastructure Levy conditions for a scheme of this size will likely mean a £4m contribution for local infrastructure including new pedestrian connectivity to Natland village, along with improvements to education, healthcare, transport, and community facilities.

With that should come a commitment to add to the infrastructure of Kendal’s waste water treatment facilities, energy infrastructure, road repair, traffic management, school enlargement and most importantly increase in medical provision. … We can’t as a town absorb the increased provision of vital services for an additional 461 homes, without significant increase in service provision.
