Stephenson appointed to Urban Splash mill

Developer Urban Splash and partner Town Centre Securities have announced Stephenson Studio as the architect for the conversion of Brownsfield Mill in Manchester’s Northern Quarter into loft apartments.

Manchester-based Stephenson, founded by architect Roger Stephenson, will now work on designs for turning the 45,000 sq ft Victorian building into a series of flats of up to 4,000 sq ft. The mill was formerly used as the offices for aviation company Avro.

It is the fourth time Urban Splash has worked with Stephenson, with past projects including Chorlton Park and Smithfield Building.

Tom Bloxham, chairman at Urban Splash, said: “Brownsfield is very much the aesthetic of an Urban Splash building. It is a classic Victorian mill with red brick, timber and big windows – the perfect setting for us as we take one of the last unconverted mills of Manchester and create some of the biggest lofts the city has ever seen. I can’t wait for us to progress designs and reveal them in the near future.”

Brownsfield Mill forms part of Town Centre Securities’ wider regeneration framework for its Piccadilly Basin estate.

The team behind Brownsfield now includes Stephenson Studio, as well as Civic Engineers and environmental engineer Max Fordham.
