Shenton plots £15m Cuerden Hall revamp

Entrepreneur Colin Shenton, owner of the grade two-listed country estate near Chorley, is to open a consultation on plans to restore the 75,000 sq ft main building and convert it into his family home.

Heritage architect Purcell and landscape designer Tom Stuart-Smith feature on the project team behind the £15m refurbishment of the building.

Most recently used as a Sue Ryder neurological care centre, the building was constructed by the High Sheriff of Lancashire, Banastre Parker, in 1717 and occupied by the Parker family until the First World War, when it was used as an infirmary.

In total, Cuerden Hall, located in Lancashire’s Cuerden Valley, comprises 179 rooms and also has 16 acres of gardens and grounds.

Once the refurbishment completes, Shenton, founder of pay-per-minute co-working space Ziferblat, plans to live at Cuerden Hall.

Shenton said: “I’m now able to share my vision for the detailed restoration of the Hall to its former glory as a private country home. Preparation of the halls planning application has taken eight months and the country’s leading specialists have provided their expert guidance.

“It is anticipated that the costs of the restoration may exceed £15m, but with such a highly-experienced team, led by Purcell and Tom Stuart Smith, I am confident that our planning application for change of use from a nursing home to a house will enable us to restore the building and grounds to the highest standards.”
