Salford to unlock funds for Walkden park and ride

The city council is to transfer £585,000 of Growth Deal cash to Transport for Greater Manchester for the delivery of the project.

Walkden park and ride, to be located on the site of the council’s former environment services depot at Chestnut Avenue, aims to improve cycling accessibility at the town’s train station and provide off-street car parking for 107 vehicles.

At present, there is no dedicated off-street parking for train station users in Walkden.

The scheme “is intended to increase the ease and attractiveness of rail use at Walkden Station”, according to a report to Salford’s property and regeneration committee.

In addition, it is hoped that Walkden park and ride will reduce congestion on local roads, in line with Greater Manchester’s 2040 transport strategy.

The strategy states that “tackling congestion…will be a major priority through a range of demand management measures, and measures to encourage modal shift, including targeted park and ride provision”.

Story Contracting has been appointed to deliver the scheme and completion is expected by the end of 2022.

TfGM is leading on the project’s delivery and Salford City Council will meet next week to approve the transfer of grant funding to the transport body.

What is the point of building park and ride if fares are rising to such level that people are being priced off the railways and priced off coming into Manchester to shop and go out and work as a result.

Germany has just introduced a €9 Euro monthly ticket for the entire country local trains to tackle the cost of living crisis while British politicians do nothing about reducing the most expensive train tickets in Europe which are why more and more people are choosing to work from home.Park and ride investment is a waste of money if people can’t afford to actually use trains.

Indirectly this shows how the city centre has changed. Ten years ago I knew commuters who would park on scrappy car parks around the Mancunian Way and Great Ancoats Street for £2 a day. Now those car parks are skyscrapers and hopefully people use other modes to get into the city centre. This car park should be useful for people in Boothstown or Worsley which don’t have stations of their own.
