Salford details long-awaited Buile Hill Mansion revamp
Proposals for the derelict grade two-listed building will see it brought back to life as a community hub and wedding venue.
The mansion sits in Buile Hill Park but has been closed to the public for several years after falling into a state of disrepair.
Under the council’s plans to bring it back into community use, the building will be home to Salford’s registry office, which will move from the Civic Centre in Swinton into the first and second floors of the mansion.
Downstairs, a café will sit alongside community and heritage exhibition space and a function room. The first and second floors will feature community meeting rooms and a flexible space for meetings.
Buile Hill Park and Mansion featured in the BBC’s Manctopia series, during which it was the subject of a potential refurbishment project.
The scheme would have been delivered with the proceeds from a housing project developed by Capital&Centric on nearby brownfield land. However, the 60-home neighbourhood didn’t progress.
Under the latest plans for the estate, part of the land that Capital&Centric earmarked for houses will be used as a car park.
Salford City Council and the Buile Hill Mansion Association have worked together on the plans, which will go forward for planning permission early in the year.
If approved, work is expected to start on site later in 2022.
Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said: “I made a commitment to bring Buile Hill Mansion back into sustainable use and I’m delighted that we can now reveal the plans to do just that.”
Buile Hill Mansion was built between 1825 and 1827 for Thomas Potter, the first elected Mayor of Manchester.
This building has been empty since the year 2000, 21 years ago. This once beautiful place has had so many promises made by building organisation’s and people and so many false promises that lets just hope that the work has promised will start next year.

Pity this building was not turned into a hotel and the banqueting suite used for evening wedding receptions, we have no where within the centre of Salford as a complete package.

Shame the proposal includes ~100 car parking spaces.

The community does not want it refurbished as they can’t decide on future use.. They do not understand the cost of refurbishment. They do not understand the lack of funding available. The decision to not sell the adjacent land to fund it was wrong. It’s an eyesore, a hazard and will soon be beyond repair. The community is the problem.

There have been several consultations and the top 4 things the community wanted in the Mansion are going in there.
The Buile Hill Mansion Association is a community led volunteer group who have worked alongside the council since 2018. They have several social media groups and a website, where you can find monthly council meeting minutes and what the group are doing to enhance the park and within the community.
Work has already started, with the bulk of the restoration starting early next year.
