Salboy launches New Mount Street apartments
Domis Construction has completed the residential conversion of the Co-operative Printing Society buildings in Manchester’s New Cross for developer Salboy.
The grade two-listed buildings on New Mount Street, most recently used as 50,000 sq ft of serviced offices, have been turned into 66 one, two and three bedroom apartments, alongside two restored cottages with private courtyards, in a development launched as The Press.
Salboy revealed in 2018 the company had formed a joint venture with Parklane Group’s Homezzz brand to bring forward the project.
Original features, including the main green tiled entrance and stained- glass oak doorway, have been retained. The apartments have exposed brick walls, original window openings and exposed beams, and are available for private sale.
The conversion added a roof extension on top of the building, taking the Naples Street elevation to four storeys, and the insertion of a glazed atrium through the site’s centre, creating an internal ‘street’ providing communal space for residents.
The scheme was designed by Axis Architecture.
The buildings were originally built for the Co-operative Printing Society, which was formed in Manchester as the North of England’s Co-operative Printing Society in 1869, and published the Society’s independent weekly newspaper.
Simon Ismail, Salboy co-founder and director, said: “It has been very rewarding to see this building brought back to life and save its unique heritage for future generations.
“The location offers the best of city centre life but also easy access to the open green of Angel Meadow Park and the wilder spaces of the Irk Valley.
“We know buyers looking to create a new home in the city love the history of old buildings and we believe we have managed to create really unique living spaces combining character and contemporary fittings.”
The apartments start at £255,357 for one bedroom, while the townhouses are priced from £375,000.
The team also included Renaissance Structural Engineers, Euan Kelly Property Solutions and Artal.
