Ropewalks landlords threatened with legal action
Owners of deteriorating property in Liverpool's historic Ropewalks area have been urged to improve their buildings – or face action by the city council.
The warning comes as it was announced that Ropewalks is to be given £1.5m of public funding in order to restore the original character of the area.
The North West Development Agency has approved a grant of just over £1m, while an extra £500,000 has been allocated from the local authority Business Growth Initiative to enhance the public areas.
Liverpool Council leader said: "We are supporting owners of buildings who are taking positive action to restore and improve buildings, but unfortunately there are other owners who are allowing their property to deteriorate and we will be taking action against them to ensure that Ropewalks' regeneration continues."
Ropewalks is currently in the first year of a three-year programme to build on the regeneration which has already transformed the area. Part of that programme include focused legal action to protect the buildings.
A total of £3.5m has already been donated by the Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage and the Townscape Heritage Initiative to help owners to fund renovations of their properties.
