RIBA North West Awards this week

The Royal Institute of British Architects has shortlisted 12 buildings across the region for the RIBA North West 2014 awards.

The winner will be announced by RIBA on the 17 April at a drinks reception in Liverpool and will go through to the national final which culminates in the Stirling Prize.

The list includes the Enterprise South Liverpool Academy, designed by architects BDP. Sue Emms, lead architect and education sector advisor for northern England at BDP, said: "The new building is a beacon that symbolises the regeneration of Garston, South Liverpool. The academy is organised around a central 'heart-space' which creates a sense of place where all users feel welcome in line with the academy's Christian ethos."

The school provides 1,100 secondary school students, aged 11-18, with over 107,640 sq ft of modern facilities.

Jack Pendlebury, ESLA's principal, said: "Students, staff and parents think it`s fantastic and are bringing friends and the local community in for tours. There has been no settling in period and the academy has been a calm, orderly and purposeful learning community from day one. I can only explain this by the fact that the building is totally fit for purpose."

The buildings on the RIBA North West 2014 shortlist are as follows:

• Carmelite Monastery in Liverpool, designed by Austin-Smith:Lord for the Carmelite Sisters
• Egerton Road North in Manchester, designed by Ollier Smurthwaite Architects for a private client
• Everyman Theatre in Liverpool, designed by Haworth Tompkins for the Liverpool & Merseyside Theatres Trust
• Highfield Humanities College in Blackpool, designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios for Blackpool Local Education Partnership/Highfield Humanities College
• Lancaster Cohousing Project in Lancaster, by Eco Arc for Lancaster Cohousing
• Liverpool Central Library, designed by Austin-Smith:Lord for Liverpool City Council
• Manchester School of Art, designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios for Manchester Metropolitan University
• Number One Riverside in Rochdale by FaulknerBrown for Rochdale Council
• Trafford Town Hall, designed by 5plus Architects for Trafford Council
• Triptych in Manchester, designed by Blee Halligan for a private client
• University of Cumbria, Ambleside, designed by John McAslan & Partners, for the University of Cumbria
