Region scoops second wave of active travel funds 

North West councils have been awarded a total of £30m from the Government’s £250m active travel pot in the second round of funding allocations, more than two thirds of which will go to Liverpool city region and Greater Manchester combined authorities. 

The Liverpool City Region will receive £7.8m and Greater Manchester has been allocated £15.8m.

The Whitehall fund is the first part of a wider £2bn initiative to upgrade the country’s walking and cycling infrastructure, announced earlier this year. 

The Emergency Active Travel Fund was established to facilitate the urgent implementation of pop-up cycle lanes and the reconfiguration of streets to support social distancing during the first national lockdown. 

Speaking at the time, transport secretary Grant Shapps said: “During this crisis, millions of people have discovered cycling, whether for exercise or as a means of safe, socially-distanced transport. When the country does get back to work we need those people to stay on their bikes and be joined by many more.” 

During the first round of funding, Greater Manchester Combined Authority was awarded £3.1m while Liverpool’s combined authority was allocated £1.9m by Government. 

During the second round of allocations Lancashire County Council has been promised £2.8m on top of the £780,000 it received in the first funding round. 

Cumbria County Council has been awarded £886,000, taking the total the county has received for active travel to £1m.
