Red’s to turn green as Tokyo plans Irish bar
The former Red’s True Barbecue site on the corner of Albert Square in Manchester is be reopened as an Irish-themed pub.
The 6,000 sq ft restaurant at the top of Lloyd Street closed in 2023 and is now being redeveloped by its owner Tokyo Industries.
Internal strip out work is ongoing and Tokyo Industries chief executive Aaron Mellor took to LinkedIn to canvas for ideas on what to call the bar.
“Deciding on names for venues is always so hard,” he said in a post.
“We’ve come up with about 300 names and suffering choice fatigue…”
Among the names on the longlist are the Craic Den, Reds True Irish, and Oscar Wilde, Mellor said.
Mellor added that the venue would have an “Irish American feel” and provide, among other things, “the finest Guinness and all-day Ulster breakfasts”.
The Newcastle-based firm bought six out of seven Red’s sites across the country when the founding company entered administration in 2019.
Tokyo Industries also operates Manchester’s Impossible and Deaf Institute.

Finally, an Irish pub in Manchester. A real shortage of those, apart from Nancy Spain’s, Mulligan’s, Mother of Invention, O’Connells, Salmon of Knowledge (Stephenson Square), Salmon of Knowledge (MediaCity), Freemount, Mother Mary’s….

…O’Sheas, O’Neills, O’Malleys, Keilys….

Do we really want another Irish bar in Manchester?
As for the name, how about `The Peel` after the very near by former central police station?

Isn’t an “Irish American pub” just a ”pub”? I’ve been in hundreds, and they’re really no different to any other pub. They sell beer/snacks and have background music. How is that different to any other pub?

Ireland has “bars”. “Pubs” are an English creation.

The finest Guinness? Really though?

There are also a lot of Italians, Chinese and Indian restaurants, so what?

Irish American ( why ) and Ulster fry would not be heard in the same sentence!

Would be good if they serve some craft Irish beers, more to the Irish brewing scene than Guinness. Beers from Brooklyn don’t count!

If it has an “Irish American feel” isn’t an Irish themed pub, it’s an American themed pub.

Seems to be a current hospitality trend to provide something far beyond the point of saturation. Times are tough but no one wants to do anything original anymore for fear of the profit margins being poor
