PODCAST | What policy reform could mean for affordable housing

Replacing Section 106 contributions with a single community infrastructure levy could severely impact the delivery of discounted homes, according to Rob Loughenbury, director of strategy at Onward Homes.

Hosted by Place North West senior reporter Dan Whelan, this podcast delves into the implications of scrapping S106, and the continued politicisation of the planning system, as well as offering up solutions that could help the affordable housing sector.

At present, more than 75% of all S106 contributions are spent on the delivery of affordable homes. Under the proposed levy, all developer contributions obtained through the planning process would go into a single pot, to be spent as councils see fit.

Registered providers are rightly concerned that this new approach could be to the detriment of affordable housing delivery and are lobbying for a rethink.
