Pendle seeks contractor for shopping centre demolition

The 100,000 sq ft retail complex in Nelson, owned by the council as of last year, will be demolished to make way for a replacement complex half the size.

Pendle Council is seeking an experience demolition contractor to knock down Pendle Rise from November this year.

The chosen contractor must “be capable of undertaking both the building demolition and asbestos removal in-house,” according to tender documents.

In addition, the selected firm should have experience working on “confined sites directly adjacent to busy public areas”.

The authority has had the redevelopment of the Nelson complex in its sights for some time. Last year, Pendle agreed to pay Mohammed Asjad Arnold £3.95m for the asset to enable it to carry out the plans.

Pendle Council can now press ahead with plans to knock down the Nelson retail centre, which was built in the 1960s, and replace it with a 55,000 sq ft mixed-use complex comprising nine commercial units as well as a supermarket as anchor tenant.

Pendle’s development partner Brookhouse – part of the public/private PenBrook JV established in 2022 – plans to invest £12.5m in the project. In addition, £9m of a wider £25m Town Deal allocation will also go towards the scheme.

Should be interesting, another White elephant for Nelson.

Look at the Ace Centre, a total disgrace how it’s standing unused.

Its certainly too late to resurrect Nelson, there’s nothing of any attraction, unless you are of ethnic origin.

We watch with bated breath….
What’s happening to the Ace Centre?
Probably get sold for a song as seems to be the theme in Nelson.

It won’t be long before all the shopping units become empty one again, because the business rates are cheaper on the streets. They have been snapped up however by ethnic communities.
