Northstone bags approval for green Wigan resi

Construction is set to begin early next year to deliver 113 houses, bungalows, and apartments on the nine-acre plot off Stothert Street in Atherton.

Wigan Council has approved the proposals, submitted by Peel’s housebuilder arm Northstone.

Known as ‘Popple’, the development will be made up of 12 one-, 31 two-, 56 three-, and 14 four-bedroom residences.

Each of the properties will be built by Northstone, and will be available in a range of tenures including open market, build-to-rent, and affordable. Letta will manage the properties and provide 24-hour property management services to tenants.

Residents will also have access to more than 100,000 sq ft of green space, featuring footpaths and new planting.

In terms of sustainability, the properties will be heated by air source heat pumps and fitted with electric vehicle charging points, removing the reliance on fossil fuels.

Plans were submitted in April following a public consultation held in January, where the homebuilder welcomed feedback on what household technology and sustainability measures residents would like to see.

Bernadette Barry, head of planning and sustainability at Northstone, said: “We’re determined to set a new quality benchmark for new homes and challenge outdated perceptions of new builds.

“This will be a really sustainable development, with all-electric power and heating sources and energy-efficient homes that will help reduce both carbon emissions and energy bills for residents.

“We’ve carefully considered the layout too, so both new and existing residents can enjoy walking and cycling routes, as well as wildlife-friendly green spaces and natural play areas.”

Turley is the planning consultant. Also on the team are Shape Engineering, Cundalls, and TEP.
