Openshaw district centre

Work starts on Dransfield retail scheme

Demolition work has started in Openshaw, east Manchester, in preparation for Dransfield Properties' £40m district centre including shops, offices and car parking.

Denton-based Windmill Demolition is demolishing the former social security offices as well as a snooker club and bank, all fronting Ashton Old Road in Openshaw.

Barnsley-based Dransfield Properties planned the scheme with Manchester City Council and the urban regeneration company New East Manchester.

The new development will include an 80,000 sq ft Morrisons supermarket, ten more shops, 57,000 sq ft of offices, a café and restaurant and 670 car parking spaces.

The new district centre is part of the regeneration of Openshaw which is aimed at doubling the population of the area in the next 10 to 15 years.

Once the site has been cleared construction work is due to start early next year.
