Wigan Sainsbury’s approved

Wigan Council has approved the development of a 4,300 sq ft Sainsbury's Local in Mesnes Road near the town centre.

The joint application, submitted by Chester-based retail developer Cityheart and Sainsbury's, will see the store built on the site of a former petrol station.

AEW is the architect on the scheme. NJL advised on planning alongside transport specialist Vectos.

The store is expected to open in early 2015.

Peta Brydon, acquisitions manager for Sainsbury's, said: "We've been wanting to open a convenience store near Wigan town centre for some time and welcome the council's decision to approve the plans. Our commitment will ensure that this site isn't left standing vacant any longer and deliver a timely boost to the local economy."

Sainsbury's also has a superstore in Wigan on Worthington Way.
