Tulip to spend £12m updating Wirral facility

Food producer Tulip UK is to reopen its sliced meat production facility in Bromborough as a sausage factory.

Tulip UK ceased its sliced cooked meat operation at Bromborough earlier this year with the loss of 300 jobs. Production was moved to alternative Tulip locations around the UK. The reopened site will initially employ 270 staff with room for production to expand.

Wirral Council leader, Cllr Steve Foulkes, said: "This is fantastic news for Wirral. As a Council we've worked hard, together with the North West Development Agency to attract investment into Bromborough and I'm so pleased that Tulip will create 270 new permanent skilled jobs – an investment like this is great news at the best of times but even more so during such a difficult time for the national economy."

Peter Judge, divisional managing director of Tulip, added: "We are delighted to be able to announce our plans to redevelop our Bromborough production facility and I would like to thank Wirral Council and the NWDA for their continued support.

"Clearly there is an awful lot of work to do before the new facility will be up and running but we are confident that we will be in a position to begin producing sausages at Bromborough in the first half of 2010."
