RIBA president to launch Architecture Festival
The President of the Royal Institute of British Architects Ruth Reed will launch North West Architecture Festival AF2011 at an event to be held at Liverpool’s Mann Island.
The evening event on Thursday 16 June will also mark the opening of an historic exhibition of the photographs of Eric de Maré (1910-2002), one of Britain’s most influential architectural photographers.
The Exploring Eye: The Photography of Eric de Maré will display over 100 photographs in the Equator Building of Mann Island near the Musuem of Liverpool. De Maré left an archive of striking images of Britain’s largely neglected industrial heritage. Organised by theme, the exhibition contains images of places, spaces, buildings and architecturally eye-catching objects in the UK and de Maré’s native Scandinavia and includes several photographs taken in Liverpool. The exhibition will be open to the public from 17 June – 4 September 2011.
AF2011 runs from 17 to 26 June across the North West with activities ranging from building tours and family events to ‘architect in the store’ days and exhibitions. Through the festival, RIBA North West aims to demonstrate the importance of architecture and good design and the role it plays in daily life.
Festival highlights include: walking tours and canal boat tours in Liverpool and Manchester, exploring the buildings and heritage of these two great industrial cities, an architectural treasure hunt in Manchester, workshops for young people, tours of the Mersey Tunnel; and, a sandcastle competition on Merseyside.

Ruth Reed, president, RIBA, commented: “The industrial landscape can provide powerful and evocative imagines. The exhibition is a counterpoint to the new development in the North West which illustrates how design can lead the regeneration of the sites of our industrial heritage.”
