Preston student flats approved

A five-storey student accommodation scheme including 190 apartments has been given the green light at Preston City Council’s planning committee.

The scheme, on Garstang Road, will also include a gym, lounge, study area and roof terrace.

The application has been made by Sunglen Properties, designed by local firm David Cox Architects.

The site sits at the corner of St George’s Road on the site of the former Canterbury Hall, a now demolished church hall and function suite associated with the neighbouring English Martyrs Church. As well as the church, neighbouring buildings include the Unicorn pub sits to the south of the site, and the Moor Park Hotel, both of which are Grade II-listed.

The plot is on sloping land, and the scheme has been designed to fit so the bottom floor would be below ground level, giving it the appearance of a four-storey building from St George’s Road.

The proposal is broadly similar to a 188-apartment, four-storey scheme, also featuring three wings, that was approved in 2010.
