Petrol station and cafe proposed for A51 near Nantwich

An environmental impact assessment application has been submitted to Cheshire East Council for the plan, which would construct a coffee outlet and petrol filling station alongside the A51 Burford traffic light junction.

The plan would also include a 50-space park and ride area for those wishing to catch the Arriva 84 bus to Chester or Crewe. Electric vehicle charging units would be available on site as well, to help curb carbon emissions.

Applicant David Taylor noted that the station would be for both personal vehicles and HGV traffic.

“This section of the A51 is the major HGV route from Junction 16 of the M6 motorway to the Holyhead ferry terminal to Dublin,” Taylor wrote.

He also said that pre-pandemic trip rate information computer system data showed there were around 15,000 vehicle movements in the area on a daily basis.

Certainly true that a lot of haulage hacks through this part of South Cheshire, its because the A500 Crewe bypass takes you far enough into Cheshire that it makes sense to cut the corner on the way to North Wales and Ireland, but its not something you want to encourage on back roads west of Nantwich without investing in the road network. Cheshire East needs some joined up thinking on this corridor because HS2 might just end up creating a London commuter zone from the west of Nantwich all the way to Wrexham and North Shropshire.

Lets hope its rejected. Shouldn’t be encouraging HGV traffic off the motorway and on to trunk roads – M6 & M56 should be the usual route to the A55. And a park & ride from Nantwich to Crewe – funniest thing I’ve read today!

Be interested to see the size of ‘this area’ that has 15,000 vehicle movements per day. Does it include the large new Kingsbourne housing estate to the east? Those HGVs are probably just going to the industrial units at Wardle. Not sure how the hourly 83 bus can compete with continuing to drive towards Crewe via Nantwich, or Chester.
