No January increase for Metrolink fares

Transport for Greater Manchester has announced that it will freeze Metrolink fares until at least August due to the disruption caused by ongoing tram works.

The fare freeze will remain in place until the end of August for customers using paper tickets and will remain until 2016 for customers who start to use the smart ticket system when it becomes available on Metrolink during 2015.

Significant improvement works are taking place across the Metrolink network, with construction under way at the Victoria and Deansgate-Castlefield stops and the second city crossing tramline being built through the city centre.

When work finishes at the Deansgate-Castlefield stop next summer, a four-platform tram stop will be built in St Peter's Square, closer to Mosley Street. A new Metrolink stop is also being created in Exchange Square.

TfGM reviews Metrolink fares annually, with any increases taking effect from the start of the working year in January.

A peak-time adult single journey from St Peter's Square to MediaCityUK currently costs £2.80. Altrincham to Bury costs £4.70.
