Liverpool school site set for new homes
Liverpool City Council is to sell a former school site in Toxteth to housing association Plus Dane Group.
On Friday 21 March the city's Cabinet will be asked to approve plans for the sale of land on North Hill Street, which previously housed Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, in order to build 38 affordable homes.
The transfer of the land includes an adjacent site bounded by Amity Street, North Hill Street and Letitia Street.
Plus Dane has planning permission to deliver a mix of affordable two, three and four bedroom houses on the site. There will be 22 for rent, with the remaining 16 for sale.
If the land transfer is approved by the Cabinet, Plus Dane is due to start on site in April, with the scheme to be completed in March 2015.
The previous school building on the site suffered serious fire damage in July 2011, which led to its demolition and clearance of the area in February 2013.
Cllr Ann O'Byrne, Liverpool City Council's cabinet member for housing, said: "We continue to work hard to improve housing across the city, and this scheme would make an important contribution to delivering the affordable housing that local people so badly need.
"It's yet another example of how we are working with our partners, and making best use of our assets. It's helping bring in new investment and deliver housing that meets the needs of residents and breathes new life into our neighbourhoods."
But is the empty brand new £25m Parklands school which is now closed the best use of assets? Or planning to demolish St Julie’s in Woolton when this has had new annexes built? And sell the land to a housing developer? Then build a new St Julies and demolish part of the newly built Palmerston School to fit St Julies on the new site? Sounds like a massive waste to me!

There was a feature in place northwest that Kier had won the £2.2 extension for Palmerston and Abbots Lea school some time back. Now this is to be demolished and relocated to Aigburth in Liverpool – in order to make way for the new St Julie’s – another example of the council having vision and not wasting money? No wonder the council tax is so expensive!

The council has transferred the site for a nominal sum when I know there have been offers for significant sums made for the site with plans also for housing development. Considering the councils financial position this deal seems strange

Liverpool City council are now consulting on the relocation of Palmerston school ! What they spent £2.2 million on building extension on for that and neighbouring SENSchool. It seems like Liverpool City. Council aren’t thinking ahead at all. Will this be sold as a positive story too and money wasted forgotten?

It appears our council has ‘no vision for the future’ whatsoever and simply wastes tax payers money. We hear of cuts to valuable much needed services and yet money appears to be available to build only then to decide to demolish and start again.
