ERDF continues Cleveleys coastal work

European Regional Development Fund cash of £450,000 has been granted towards a regeneration project on Cleveleys Promenade.

Wyre Council plans to improve 64,000 sq ft of the promenade to create a more attractive place for visitors to the town. The latest work will complement the £20m sea defence installation.

The additional funding will be used to create a large and visually stunning piece of artwork in the main plaza that will be visible from several miles away. A memorial to famous ship wrecks is also planned, with the centrepiece being the anchor from the MS Riverdance that beached near Cleveleys on 31 January 2008. Attempts to refloat the ferry failed, she was scrapped on site and thousands of people were attracted to see the wreckage and disposal of the ferry.

One final piece of the jigsaw will be the installation of a welcome to Wyre gateway close to the boundary with Blackpool which will form part of the Mythic Coastline trail. This project running the length of the promenade will use artwork and events to capture the history, folklore and spirit of the surrounding area.

Clrr Keith Sedgewick, an ERDF programme monitoring committee member, said: "Enhancement of the seaside promenade, attractive public areas and new artwork will bring a real lift to Cleveleys Promenade and improve the tourism experience. Large-scale improvements such as this act as a catalyst to bring new investment and visitors which will boost the local economy and bring new jobs.

"Some wonderful work has been done on the promenade so far and I am pleased that ERDF investment can support its continued redevelopment. It is excellent to see European money coming to Lancashire."
