Lancaster Uni forges ahead with £21m campus greening

The institution has submitted plans for a scheme that will help it transition to renewable energy and decarbonise its estate.

Lancaster University was awarded a £21m grant by the government last year to decarbonise its estate. Plans for an energy centre have now been lodged with the hope of meeting the March 2025 funding deadline.

The project will see large-scale air source heat pumps installed to serve the university’s existing district heat network.

At present, the DHN is served by a natural gas fired combined heat and power unit and supplies 60% of the Lancaster University’s buildings.

The heat pumps would be supplied by renewable electricity from a new solar PV farm, which Lancaster University already has permission for, and an on-site wind turbine.

These will provide a low carbon and renewable solution for heat and electricity supply to the whole campus for the next 20-40 years, according to a planning statement prepared by AECOM.
