DV8 wins Southport Market overhaul brief

The design company has been appointed by Dawnvale Group and Sefton Council to refurbish Southport Market.

The market site sits in the town’s market district, with the original food hall burning down soon after its grand opening in 1857. The current building is the second version of the design and retains its Victorian features.

The vision for the redesign will draw on the successes of European food markets and will incorporate a cultural model that encourages social eating and sharing, local partnership and collaboration, and supporting local producers and small businesses.

It is to be inspired by Southport’s coast and will draw on expertise from local food and drink specialists such as brewers of craft ales and small batch spirits. The market will also include a flexible events space in the middle of the market.

DV8 has said it plan to incorporate funfair elements, including carousel horses, and circus tent-style canvas into the scheme.

DV8 has previously worked on The Liverpool Gin Bar & Distillery on Castle Street, and the ‘meet, eat, work’ space at EngineRooms at Birchwood Park in Warrington.

Lee Birchall, director of DV8 Designs, said: “We bring our extensive experience and specialist knowledge of the sector to the table, along with our passion and our true Northern pride. The redesign of Southport Market space will be integral to the regeneration of this fantastic destination, and we are so proud to be involved.”

The current market is open between 9am and 5pm Monday to Saturday with existing occupiers including Blackhurst’s Butchers along with several craft and clothing stalls.

Sefton Council said that it was “totally committed” to keeping the market operation throughout the refurbishment.

I think it will do ok. Better than whats there now. My Grandparents and Great Grandparents had stalls there and I reckon they would have loved it….Better than the dreary characterless crap that’s there now…

Chester Market was on its knees but has undergone a remarkable turn around in fortunes. Maybe it should be the paragon for Southport?
