Council proposes conservation extension
Residents in and around the West Derby Village area of Liverpool are being consulted by the council about proposals to extend the existing conservation area.
The council's plan is to extend protection to more than 100 additional buildings in the area. The new boundary would encompass the existing West Derby Village Conservation Area with an extension southwards to include most of the properties on Hayman's Green, Eaton Road North, part of Crosby Green and a longer section of Mill Lane. It would also extend further westwards to include the West Derby Community Centre, Field House and the Margaret Beavan School. The Castle Field and St Mary's Rectory to the north would also be included.
The local authority said: "If the conservation area is extended it means the special character and appearance of a larger part of the Village will be preserved. Although it does not prevent new developments it means proposed demolition of buildings is subject to greater controls with a presumption that there should be no demolition of architecturally or historically significant buildings."
There would also be greater consideration given to the design of new buildings and structures in planning decisions. Minor works, not normally subject to planning permission, such as replacing windows and adding minor extensions will be subject to greater controls.
Letters have been delivered to local residents and they are asked to respond by 25 November 2011.
