Blears quits cabinet

Communities Secretary Hazel Blears, the cabinet member in charge of planning policy and public inquiry decisions, today issued a written statement outlining her resignation.

The MP for Salford said she "wanted to help the Labour party to reconnect with the British people, to remind them that our values are their values, that their hopes and dreams are ours too."

A cabinet reshuffle is widely expected to following the results of this Thursday's local and European elections.
