Blackburn with Darwen Council has put a site in Mill Hill on the market, paving the way for construction work to start after nearly 10 years of land assembly.
The council has been working on purchasing homes on the site since 2008 to bring forward a regeneration of the area, and as of this year only three remain to be purchased. Many of the homes on the site were previously demolished in 2010.
Blackburn with Darwen has also bought the Griffin pub which will be demolished and its site included into the wider regeneration of the area.
The council also secured funds from the One Public Estate Land Release Fund to help support enabling works, and is now seeking a contractor and developer to bring forward homes on the site.
This could include between 120 and 150 homes including a mix of two, three, and four-bed properties, delivered across two phases. The first phase focusses on East Street, and the second is around Hancock Street.
It is estimated the development of the site could bring around £16m of new investment to the borough.
The developer will be decided via mini-competition on the council’s construction and development framework, which has five incumbents: Barnfield, Casey, Eric Wright Group, I&H Brown, and Seddon.
The Griffin site is one of the council’s 180 public and private sites identified for development across the borough; the framework will be used to accelerate the delivery of these sites.
The Griffin scheme is due to be discussed by the council’s executive on 9 August.
