New home lined up for Liverpool’s Parr Street Studios

The recording studio is to relocate to Islington after plans to convert an industrial unit on Kempston Street in the city’s Ropewalks district were approved.

The studio’s relocation paves the way for its former home to be redeveloped into apartments under proposals lodged by a company called Rooftop Property.

The 3,400 sq ft building, close to the Royal Liverpool Hospital, is a two-storey former warehouse, most recently used as a place of worship.

Rooftop Property’s directors include Chris Taylor and Rich Turvey, who run Parr Street Studios, as well as James Skelly, frontman of The Coral.

Under Rooftop’s proposals, the building would feature several recording and production studios across two floors, as well as a kitchen, canteen, and meeting room.

Skelly’s record label, Skeleton Key, operates out of Parr Street Studios.

Last April, developer PJ Percival Construction lodged plans to convert 33-55 Parr Street into a hotel, 114 apartments and 12,000 sq ft of retail space.

News of the development sparked anger on social media among members of the public who objected to Parr Street Studios having to relocate.

The plans have not yet been approved by Liverpool City Council.

The planner for the project is Mosaic Town Planning, and Architecture JD has drawn up the proposals.

Parr Street Studios has played host to a number of high-profile artists including Black Sabbath, Bjork and Justin Bieber.
