Mersey Tidal Power Project location chosen

A 1.5-mile stretch across the River Mersey between Bromborough and Otterspool has been selected as the preferred spot to develop the landmark Liverpool City Region renewable energy project.

The location is due to be firmed up at Friday’s Liverpool City Region Combined Authority meeting.

Mersey Tidal Power Project is anticipated to generate 1 GW of energy and be operational for 120 years, provided it can secure a Development Consent Order from government.

The scheme is in line to submit its DCO application in late 2028. Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, which is leading the effort, said it is spending £2.5m a year to support the development of the application. Another £16m is going to be needed for environmental survey sand other work.

LCRCA anticipates investing a total of £50m in the project to get it through to a final investment decision.

Mott MacDonald and Arup are working with the combined authority on the scheme. A second round of public engagement on the project is due to be held late next year.

Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram described the decision on the projec’ts location as a “major step”.

“The Mersey has one of the biggest tidal ranges in the country and we have the industrial expertise and the ambition to help do something genuinely world-leading,” he said.

“And with the potential to protect homes and businesses from rising sea levels too, this could be an investment in our region’s future that our children, grandchildren and generations beyond them could still be benefiting from a century from now.”
