McCarthy & Stone plots Sefton retirement complex
The developer, which specialises in housing for retirees, has lodged plans for 44 one- and two-bedroom apartments on a site previously occupied by the Royal British Legion in Maghull.
Under the plans, the single-storey, red brick building on Liverpool Road South would be demolished to make way for the development.
A four-storey, L-shaped block, bordered by the Leeds/Liverpool canal, would replace the Royal Legion Building.
The scheme, designed by Yorkshire-based architect One Design Architectural Services, would also include a manager’s office and guest suite, together with 35 parking spaces.
The planner for the scheme is Altrincham-based The Planning Bureau, which said the development represented a “significant opportunity” to contribute towards meeting the projected requirement for special needs accommodation for older people in the local area.
The 85+ age group is the fastest growing demographic in the UK, according to the Office of National Statistics. In 1983, there were 600,000 people in that category compared to a predicted 3.2m by 2033.
