Manchester to acquire West Gorton land
The city council has approved the release of capital to buy a plot of land on Vaughan Street known as The Yard.
Manchester will acquire the site, currently used as a timber yard, for £679,000.
The land, which also fronts Gorton Road close to the railway line, will allow “future growth of Space Studios” while supporting continued economic development in West Gorton, according to the council.
Spaces Studios, which opened in 2014, has been used to record several well-known TV shows including Peaky Blinders and Alex Garland’s Devs.
Due to the continued rise in popularity of streaming platforms, the TV and film studio is expanding.
In June, Manchester Creative Digital Assets appointed PRP to design a 70,000 sq ft extension of Space Studios.
It is unclear exactly what the land bought by the council will be used for, but it it is understood it will not be used to house the PRP-designed expansion.
The city council was contacted for comment.
To the east of the site, One Manchester is developing just over 100 apartments on two sites off Pottery Lane. To the west, Ascenda won approval last year for 340 homes off Bennett Street near Ardwick Station.
