HOW advises on Aldi expansion
The discount supermarket chain has instructed Manchester-based HOW Planning to prepare plans for three new stores and two extensions.
The new stores, all of 15,000 sq ft gross floor areas, 10,500 sq ft net, would be in Skipton, Prestwich and Offerton. Extensions are proposed to the retailer's Didsbury and Burnley stores to increase their size by 20%.
If approved, the scheme in Skipton will represent the first discount foodstore in the Craven area. The store proposed in Prestwich would occupy an edge-of-centre location and bring new life to the south of Prestwich town centre. In Offerton, the store would redevelop a largely derelict shopping precinct, part of Stockport Council's regeneration plans. Decisions on all three schemes are anticipated over the next couple of months.
Dan Brown, principal planner of HOW Planning, said: "It is an exciting time for Aldi as their national expansion programme is progressing at pace. We have already submitted three planning applications for new stores since our appointment earlier in the year, as well as applications for extensions and a range of other works to existing stores in their portfolio. We are appraising a number of other sites for the retailer across the North West and anticipate that further applications for new stores will be submitted before the end of the year."
