Housing plan for Hyde’s Globe Works

The derelict four-acre site is set to be redeveloped into 43 houses and apartments with Tameside Council set to sign off the proposals later this week.

The former mill site has been vacant for more than a decade and has been subject to fly-tipping, but the latest attempt to redevelop the plot for housing is set to progress with Tameside’s planning committee due to sign off updated plans at a meeting on 4 September.

Designed by Studio KMA for BAK Contracts, the proposals are for a mix of four one-bed and two two-bed apartments, along with 18 three-bedroom townhouses and 19 four-bedroom townhouses, with a mix of two and three-storey homes on the site.

Following discussions with the council, the number of homes on the site has been reduced by 14.

The site has a long planning history; proposals for residential development were first approved in 2004 and a reserved matters application came forward in 2008, but was never implemented. Outline plans came forward again in 2013, this time for 44 homes, but these were withdrawn three years later after a Section 106 agreement failed to complete.

In each case, financial viability issues were blamed for a lack of progress.

Tameside Council has been recommended to sign off the scheme, but with a number of conditions; these include signing a Section 106 agreement with in six months.

Officers said: “The proposals represent a highly efficient re-use of a brownfield site that would meet sustainability requirements, and contribute positively to the borough’s housing supply.”
