Homes plotted for Moston’s Adelphi cinema site
Developer Kayber Court Investments has lodged plans for a 27,500 sq ft residential scheme on Kenyon Lane in Moston, Manchester.
The four-storey block would provide 33 apartments, the majority of which would have two bedrooms, under the proposals designed by architects Falconer Chester Hall.
The proposed scheme would also feature a landscaped residents’ garden to the rear.
The site originally housed the Adelphi cinema before the building was converted into a bingo hall and then a DIY store called Deanway Hardware. The property is in disrepair and would be demolished to make way for the new scheme, according to Kayber Court Investments.
Work is expected to begin on site in 2021 subject to planning consent from Manchester City Council, and the appointment of a main contractor.
Zerum is the planning consultant for the scheme, DEP Landscape Architecture is the landscape architect, Vectos is the transport planner and RBA is the acoustics consultant. Manchester-based Abacus Law is the solicitors firm advising Kayber Court.
A spokesman for Kayber Court said: “This is an ideal site for affordable housing. The area is in need of additional high-quality stock and we aim to plug that gap.”
Mike Gore, Manchester-based director of Falconer Chester Hall, added: “We’ve picked up on the red brick vernacular of the neighbouring buildings and use strong fenestration to give a confident frontage on what is a prominent site on one of Moston’s main roads.
“It’s a well-mannered building that sits well on its plot.”
The Adelphi Cinema was built on the site of the Empress Picture House, which opened in 2014 with seating for 700 people. The Adelphi itself later opened in 1937 with seating for 1,312 people in a stadium layout.
The cinema closed in 1962 with a double bill of Winchester 73 and Sword of Ali Baba as its final screening, before the building was converted to a bingo hall.
After this closed, the empty property was partially damaged by a fire before being refurbished and reopened as a hardware store.
