Final days for Taylor Wimpey’s Northwich office
Taylor Wimpey's Northwich office will effectively close at the end of this week, with the loss of around 40 jobs, as the struggling housebuilder starts to implement its cost-cutting programme.
Further cuts are also being made to offices in Warrington and Manchester as part of the wide-ranging programme announced in May.
In total, more than 600 of the 4,700 UK workforce will be made redundant. Thirteen out of 39 offices are set to close.
Ian Smith, managing director of the Northwich office, is relocating to the Midlands. The Cheshire base, formerly part of George Wimpey before the merger last year with Taylor Woodrow, does not officially close until the end of September but most staff are leaving this week.
The firm reported a pre-tax loss of £19.5m in 2007, against profits of £405.6m a year earlier.
Other housebuilders have been laying of staff over recent weeks, including Crest Nicholson, which is making 10% of its 300 northern-based staff redundant, Redrow, which has laid off 200 staff, around 15% of its workforce, and Barratt, which has warned that up to 20% of its staff could be axed if the downturn continues.
