DoT approves Stobart’s Port of Weston plans
Stobart Group is to begin its redevelopment of the Port of Weston in Runcorn after receiving a Harbour Revision Order from the Department of Transport.
The transport and logistics business will create a coastal feeder and bulk shipping port, which will include up to 400,000 sq ft of warehouses and container handling facilities, at the 50-acre port across the River Mersey from its existing 3MG road-rail-river freight facility in Widnes.
Stobart acquired the port last year when it merged with the Westbury Property Fund, at the same time as buying Widnes-based freight handling firm O'Connor.
Andrew Tinkler, chief executive of Stobart Group, said: "By returning the Port of Weston to a fully functioning port, we will further enhance our range of cost-effective logistics solutions for our customers, whilst helping to reduce carbon emissions and the amount of freight transported around the country's road network."
