Crown Street site for sale

A 5.5-acre southern gateway site in Manchester has been put on the market, and is earmarked as suitable for residential development.

The former Dandara-owned site on Chester Road and Crown Street currently features the 9,000 sq ft Bridgewater House and temporary car parking. Dandara launched plans in 2005 for the plot, which included seven mixed-use tower blocks totalling 750,000 sq ft surrounding a public square. The scheme stalled in 2007 due to the recession.

Colliers International and Cummings Commercial are selling the site on behalf of a private landowner.

The plot is part of the former Great Jackson Street Development Framework currently being reviewed by the council with a revised and more residential-led framework expected before the end of 2014.

Mike Brassington, director of Colliers, said the location represented an "excellent development opportunity for this important gateway site to the city centre.

"This is a strategic site at the Southern gateway to Manchester city centre and beside the residential neighbourhood of Castlefield. As cranes return in numbers to the city skyline we expect a very high level of interest from residential developers."
