Conlon cracks on with Wigan SEND work

The Preston contractor is to deliver an £18m project that will provide a new home for Hope School & College.

The relocation of the school from Kelvin Grove to Central Park off Montrose Avenue was consulted on as far back as 2019, and was approved in 2024.

Wigan Council was the applicant, with Michael Hyde & Associates the architect.

Documents filed in August with the local authority show Conlon stepping up the delivery programme, with the submission of a construction and environmental management plan.

As set out in this document, the main works consist of building two new single-storey classroom blocks, predominantly of steel frame construction, along with the refurbishment of an existing 1980s two-storey block, to be used as the main administration building.

Conlon said that all accessible windows and doors have been hoarded with steel shuttering for security. Proposed works include full interior strip-out, new windows/doors, removal of existing partitions ad their replacement with new partitions.

Associated external works include car parking, pupil playgrounds and courtyard, and landscaping.

Conlon is busy in education: the employee-owned firm is also on board as contractor for the Crewe primary school approved this week by Cheshire East.

The business has already delivered a number of SEN and SEND projects as main contractor, including Springwood School in Salford, which opened in time for this month’s intake of pupils, Highfurlong School in Blackpool in 2025, and Springfield School in Wilmslow in 2024.
