Casey picked to build £4m Rawtenstall Market rethink
Rossendale Council has appointed the contractor for the redevelopment project, which is central to its masterplan for the town.
Casey will begin on-site from January 2026, with the £4m works expected to be completed in early 2027.
Rawtenstall Market has stood off Newchurch Road since 1906, but a decline in footfall in recent years has encouraged a rethink.
Once Casey finishes the build, the market will boast a refurbished roof, improved ventilation, rooflights, and reconfigured entrances.
Currently, the market only operates twice a week, but the upgrades are set to bump that up to five days.
Cllr Nick Harris, portfolio holder for regeneration at Rossendale Council, said: “Appointing Casey is a key milestone in making the Rawtenstall Market redevelopment a reality.
“This is a project that will not only enhance our town centre but also create opportunities for local businesses and tradespeople to play a part in delivering it.
“We want the benefits of this investment to be felt right across our community – through jobs, skills, and local spend.”
Casey is to encourage local suppliers, trades, and businesses to help support the project’s delivery by holding a ‘Bidders’ Day at the site on 11 December.

Sue Wilkinson, client engagement manager at Casey, added: “We’re delighted to be working with Rossendale Council on this exciting project.
“Rawtenstall Market has a strong local identity, and we’re committed to working closely with the council, traders, and the community to ensure the redevelopment reflects that.
“We’re especially keen to involve local suppliers and subcontractors wherever possible, and we hope to see plenty of local businesses at our ‘Bidder’s Day’ in December.”

Have any other developers been considered besides ‘Casey’?. What sort of disruption can we expect on Bank Street/Newchurch Road backing on to the traffic lights on Burnley Road. Have locals been consulted?

Good plan but what about a swimming pool for Haslingden as promised some years ago?

I can think of better use for that amount of money. Ridiculous. Look a Haslingden Market. Complete waste of funds.
