Calico advances £16.6m extra care scheme in Burnley

A total of 93 apartments aimed at older people who require additional support are to be built on vacant land off Briercliffe Road next to the town’s hospital.

Calico Group has submitted a planning application for the scheme to Burnley Council.

Designed by architect Brock Carmichael, the £16.6m development would be constructed by Ring Stones Maintenance and Construction, part of The Calico Group.

The project, unveiled a year ago and billed as the first of its kind in Burnley, is intended to “provide specialist assisted living accommodation in a neighbourhood setting, aimed at improving older people’s quality of life and reducing the risk of social isolation”, according to Calico.

Partners from East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, Burnley Council, the University of Central Lancashire, and Lancashire County Council have been working closely with Calico and local residents to develop the proposals.

The proposals include a community space, communal gardens, and a wellbeing hub with bistro.

If plans are approved, construction work is scheduled to begin in 2022, with completion expected in 2024.

Wendy Malone, director of development at Calico Homes, said: “This development will help to continue our commitment to investment and regeneration in the area, supporting communities where they need it the most, and making a real difference to people’s health and wellbeing.

“This would be the first scheme of its type in Burnley and offers new ways of working with partners to create an innovative service and provide positive outcomes.”
