Bury and Muse lay out timeline for Prestwich regeneration

The developer and the local council have formally entered into a joint venture to overhaul Longfield Shopping Centre and a planning application for the scheme is expected next October.

The 10-year joint venture between Bury Council and Muse Developments will see £100m invested in Prestwich town centre, according to a report to Bury’s overview and scrutiny committee.

The timeline for the mixed-use regeneration of Prestwich town centre states that work may not begin until late 2025, once the JV has secured vacant possession of the retail centre.

Bury Council and Muse Developments, which set up Prestwich Regeneration LLP in October to deliver the scheme, hope to have vacant possession of the shopping centre by November 2025 at the latest so that demolition can begin the following month.

The redevelopment of Longfield Shopping Centre will feature a community hub accommodating council services including library and adult learning.

This part of the project will be delivered as the first phase and will be funded by the council, according to the report.

Later phases of the development could include a market, retail space, apartments, townhouses and a green travel hub with multi-storey car park.

The regeneration scheme is made possible thanks to Bury Council’s purchase of the Longfield Shopping Centre from Hollins Murray Group in August 2021.

Muse had previously been involved in the project back in 2016 when HMG appointed the developer to draw up plans to revamp the seven-acre site.

Muse and Bury were contacted for comment.

Any timeline for the Muse development in Bolton? The land has been largely cleared but no sign of any construction work.

Prestwich is supposed to be one of the most sought after places to live in the country. This eyesore does it no favours.

Library and Community hub…. what a waste and an unsustainable use. Kowtowing to do-gooders.

Good to see this finally happening . I was on the Regen committee over 15 years ago , in the meantime Prestwich has been expanding fast into the Didsbury of the North that Ivan Lewis local MP predicted 20 years ago .

If it’s being demolished next year why is a new bar opening with a 3 year lease

Hi Anonymous! As the story states, demolition would not begin until the joint venture has vacant possession of the shopping centre in late 2025. A planning application is expected next year which would have more details on what the redevelopment would look like. – Julia

Hope there’s a nice square with restaurants and bars with outdoors areas, a real community space rather than just the ones along the main road

Good to see the regeneration is finally happening in 5 years from now. Was that 2025? Or 2035?

At least try and make a central plaza/piazza style where people would want to sit out and spend time, with cafe terraces etc, Spanish or Italian style. Also greenery in the form of trees and not bushes because bushes are where people throw their trash and are harder to keep clean and hygenic. Good luck with the project, currently its awful and depressing
