Broad Green station revamp on track

Northern Trains, part of the Department for Transport, applied to revamp Broad Green station last year, a project that will provide step-free access to both platforms.

The scheme is part of the DfT-funded Access for All programme, aimed at improving station facilities for people with disabilities.

Working with Strzala Architects, Northern Trains’ project will involve the demolition of the existing station building and the creation of a larger, modern replacement.

The new station building will feature a range of accessible facilities including a waiting room, toilets and a ticket office counter.

Access to the station will also be improved through the installation of two passenger lifts and a ramp to the Old Thomas Lane entrance.

The majority of the Bowring Road site is owned by Network Rail and leased to Northern Trains. Liverpool City Council owns a small parcel of land in the station’s demise that is in the process of being transferred to Network Rail, according to Strzala.

Consultancy Vextrix is also advising on the proposal.

Elsewhere in Liverpool, plans for two new train stations are progressing. The £80m Kirkby Headbolt station was approved last year, while the reopening of the former St James station in the Baltic Triangle after more than a century is also on the cards.

The presence of Broadgreen station has led to hundreds of new homes being built in the immediate area, thus showing people will use railways to commute for work, shopping, leisure etc, hopefully the new station in Kirkby will attract more residential nearby. Over on the Wirral loads of new homes are being built near Moreton station for example, at last we are seeing some joined-up thinking here.

The cost of Headbolt Lane Station includes embankment strengthening from Kirkby Station, new tracks, platforms, lifts, waiting rooms, toilets etc and providing services such as drainage, sewerage, water, electricity etc. Then there’s the wage bill on top of that.

According to correspondence I received last year this project was due for completion by March 2023 ” at the latest “. But there is no sign of the project even starting.
Can you please give an update on progress.

Work started in April and looked to be progressing well, with signs saying everything would be affected until November. And then excavation seemed to come to a halt at the end of August. No more digging seems to have taken place during September and October. There have been a couple of engineers spotted occasionally with theodolites. But the site is still a mess of excavated rubble so there’s no sign of any building works starting any time soon. It’s almost as if the construction firm has gone bust. There’s no communication from Northern Rail and their website has no news on it whatsoever (and also indicates that the station has a functioning ticket office). And I await the signs at the station having ‘November’ taped over at some point in the next month. And, finally, don’t get me started on the lack of shelters now we’re into rainy season. Extra seats were installed when the old shelters were removed but what use are they in autumn/winter without any cover?

Two years on (January 2024) there is still no progress. No ticket office, no shelter on platform 1 and no access between the platforms. Building has stopped completely and there’s no information from Network Rail, train operators or Merseyrail. An absolute disgrace.
