Bam wins emergency services HQ contract

Bam Construction in Salford has been selected as the preferred contractor for the £10m design-and-build contract for an Ambulance & Fire Services Resource Centre in Wrexham, North Wales.

The 39,000 sq ft two-storey building will provide separate and shared accommodation for the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust and the North Wales Fire & Rescue Service, including kitchen, general offices and a community area. The ambulance service will have a work depot for its vehicles and an administration office. The fire service will have garaging facilities for eight vehicles, an administration office and a fire training house.

The centre will be within easy access of Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

The project team includes architect IBI Nightingale, engineer Arup and mechanical, electrical and plumbing advice from Lorne Stewart. Bam's supply chain partners include Turner & Townsend for cost management and Capita Consulting Health & Wellbeing. Mace is the project manager, the cost advisor role will be provided by Aecom and construction, design and management co-ordination is supplied by Turner & Townsend.

Ged Flanagan, construction director of Bam, said: "We have worked closely with both services who have similar overall needs as well as their own specific requirements. It is an interesting scheme with an innovative approach and now planning has been granted we are looking forward to delivering the project."

The project is being funded by the Welsh Government.

Bam will start work on site in August 2014 with completion expected in January 2016.
