Approval for 343 Darwen homes

An application from McDermott Homes to build housing at Ellison Fold Way in the Lancashire town has been given the go-ahead.

Blackburn with Darwen Council’s planning committee met on Thursday night last week to determine the application, approving the McDermott project in line with officer recommendations.

Consultation was carried out late last year on the proposals from Altham-based McDermott, which concern a site known locally as Bailey’s Field, to the edge of Darwen’s urban area near Roman Road.

The entire site, which is effectively two parcels divided by Ellison Fold Way, is allocated for housing in the Local Plan within the East Darwen Development Corridor.

Historically, the 44-acre site was part of a colliery that closed before World War I. Ellison Fold Way is a new road built to access sites to the east, and to alleviate pressure on the A666.

The northern part of the site will take the vast majority of the housing, 324 homes, with the southern part taking 19. Sixty seven homes in the scheme will be grant-funded affordable homes.

Section 106 payments as suggested by officers would amount to £1.5m over five years, covering payments for green infrastructure, highways and education.

McDemott’s professional team includes Trevor Bridge Associates on landscaping, Ironside Farrah, transport planner Eddisons and Robert E Fry & Associates.

Last summer McDermott secured approval for 63 homes in Pleckgate, Blackburn.
