Anglesey golf plans lodged

Proposals to add facilities including a PuttStroke family mini golf course and a new clubhouse and bar at Llangefni Golf Club have been filed with the county council.

Key advisors on the project are planning consultancy Owen Devenport and architect WM Design.

The plans in full involve a PuttStroke course, a new clubhouse, a bar and refreshment building, a toilet block and a “halfway house” refreshment building.

In the planning statement filed with the application, Owen Devenport said: “Overall, it is concluded that the proposed scheme would form a suitable extension to the existing cluster of businesses and facilities on site, whilst also providing an additional high-quality tourism attraction, and as such it is a facility that can be supported under relevant policy.

“The proposal will be suited to its setting and the wider locality in terms of its nature, scale, and design, and would have a minimal and entirely acceptable impact upon the landscape.”

The professional team also includes Cambrian Ecology, Rob Taylor Arboriculture, Weetwood on drainage,

The applicant is Golf Mon, headed by Matthew Wharton, who in recent years has invested in the immediate area with projects such as the Popty Pizza restaurant. Wharton, a golf pro and coach, took over the lease of the driving range at the site after it and the club’s nine-hole course closed in 2018.

Ambitious plans being lodged for the site raise the question of landowner Anglesey Council’s long-term plans: the authority said in 2018 it intended to sell the site as at that point it was loss-making.
